UTM Tracking Guide for Small Business Campaigns

UTM links help you understand where traffic and sales come from. Without UTM tracking, Facebook posts, ads, emails, QR codes and influencer campaigns often become impossible to compare.

What is a UTM link?

A UTM link is a normal URL with campaign information added at the end. Analytics tools can read those parameters and show which campaign brought traffic.

Common UTM fields

  • Source: facebook, google, newsletter, influencer
  • Medium: paid, social, email, qr, referral
  • Campaign: eid_sale, launch_offer, retargeting
  • Content: video_ad, banner_a, story_link

Example

If you run a Facebook ad for a summer sale, your source can be facebook, medium can be paid_social, and campaign can be summer_sale.
